Healthcare

health insurance

The word healthcare brings up a lot of different emotions for people, the main one being for many who is going to look after them in the event of a health crisis, or where are they going to obtain medical and therapeutic help if they need it or in the event of emergencies.

In different countries take different approaches as to how they provide any type of healthcare provision for their people, perhaps the most controversial and unwieldy system is that of healthcare insurance, as exemplified by the system in the United States.

People tend to assume that insurance works pretty much the same, whether it be for your home your car for your health. In fact health insurance works very differently to other types of insurance, and healthcare needs can almost be squeezed out of the system entirely.

Most types of insurance assume that the risk you are insuring against is actually never going to happen. Most people assumed that the house is never going to be burned down, or that their car is never going to be stolen, or that they are never going to be involved in a motor accident.

Health Interventions

Health care insurance does not have these assumptions,on the contrary it assumes that people will actually need a significant amount of health interventions in their lives, ranging from birth through to death. Most people are also going to need at least some type of medical therapeutic intervention at some point in their lives as well.

Healthcare insurance is almost a hybrid type system of insurance companies trying to take control of individual hospitals and healthcare providers and managing their interventions and the costs involved.

A typical healthcare insurance policy will provide some level of basic care, but there will also be differing levels of costs involved. There will be a annual premium payable, possibly on a monthly basis.

There will be at least one if not more deductible under the policy. Quite often there is an individual deductible, as well as a family deductible, and possibly separate deductibles for various types of prescription drugs.

In addition there will be costs related to what known as co-pay and co-insurance. Co-pay refers to a payment system where the individual will pay a small or recently small fixed fee for regular services, such as regular visits to a primary care physician.

Co-insurance has a different meaning in health care insurance to other types of insurance. In healthcare insurance it means that the individual policyholder effectively shares the risk with the insurance company on a sliding percentage scale.

This means that if your insurance policy has an 80%/20% coinsurance scale, then for the benefits that are designated as such, the insurance company will pay 80% of the costs, and you are expected to pay the remaining 20%.

For many people who take out health care insurance, and rely upon it to pay their medical bills this can be a huge and significant sum of money. It means that for most if not all of the healthcare costs that they rely upon the insurance to provide, they will have to pay at least a fifth of the costs involved, as well as all costs involved that relate to their deductibles.
